Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door (X290) Tuning Guide 2026 — Body Kits, Wheels & Performance

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe (X290) occupies a strange and glorious niche in the AMG hierarchy. It wears the GT name but shares almost nothing with the two-seat roadster — underneath sits the MRA platform used by the E-Class W213, stretched to accept four real seats and a long, low roof. Under the bonnet lives the M177 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, here tuned to 630 hp and 900 Nm, driving all four wheels through AMG's 9-speed MCT and variable 4Matic+. The result is a car that will sprint to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, top 315 km/h, and still drop the kids at school. This guide covers every meaningful upgrade available for the GT 63 S 4-Door — body kits, wheels, performance and interior — and explains what actually works.

Platform Overview

The X290 is built on the MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, shared primarily with the E-Class W213 and CLS C257. That is useful to know because a lot of suspension, electrical and drivetrain know-how developed for those cars transfers directly. The GT 4-Door range runs from the GT 53 (3.0-litre M256 inline-six with EQ Boost, 435 hp) through the V8 cars: GT 63 (585 hp M177), GT 63 S (630 hp M177) and the flagship GT 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid (843 hp / 1,400 Nm combined). Production ran from 2018 to 2024, with the facelift (restyling) arriving in 2021 bringing updated MBUX, revised bumpers and the E Performance variant. Tuner knowledge is deep: Brabus, Mansory, Larte Design, RevoZport DarwinPro and Renntech have all released full programmes.

Body Kits

Brabus Rocket 900 & Brabus 800

Brabus remains the default choice for GT 4-Door owners who want factory-level integration. The Brabus 800 programme lifts the M177 to 800 hp and 1,000 Nm via new turbos, larger intercoolers and recalibrated ECU, and pairs that with a subtle aero package — a carbon front splitter, side blade inserts, a low rear diffuser and a lip spoiler on the boot. The limited Brabus Rocket 900 "One of Ten" pushes the combustion V8 to 900 hp / 1,250 Nm (electronically pegged to 1,050 Nm) and adds full-carbon widebody arches, a naked-carbon bonnet, and Monoblock Z "Platinum Edition" 22-inch forged wheels. Brabus also sells the bodywork separately, so you can run stock power with Brabus cosmetics or vice versa. Quality of fit is the benchmark — panels are fully carbon, pre-painted, and bonded rather than taped.

Mansory GT 63 S "Wide Body"

Mansory's GT 63 S kit is the loudest statement you can put on the X290. The wide-body conversion adds roughly 70 mm of track front and rear, all panels in visible prepreg carbon, a two-piece front splitter, aggressive vented bonnet, fender louvres, a rear wing with carbon uprights and a chunky diffuser housing the relocated quad exhausts. Power optionally climbs to 820 hp. Mansory pairs the kit with its own forged wheels in 22-inch as standard and full-leather interior rework. It is a Dubai/London car rather than a German autobahn car — everything is oversized, contrasting and deliberately visible — but the engineering is solid and the carbon is genuine aerospace-grade.

Larte Design Wild Beast

Larte Design's Wild Beast kit for the GT 4-Door takes a more restrained approach. It keeps the factory silhouette but replaces the bumpers, adds a carbon bonnet with functional vents, carbon mirror caps, side sills and a discreet boot spoiler. The rear diffuser is one of the cleanest on the market and integrates with the stock exhaust or Larte's own stainless system. Parts are offered in satin-finish carbon or painted to body colour. Larte is priced well below Brabus and Mansory, and the Russian-Italian engineering is genuinely good — panel gaps sit within 1-2 mm of OEM on a careful install.

RevoZport DarwinPro

Hong-Kong-based RevoZport produces the DarwinPro aero package aimed at track-focused owners. Items include a carbon front lip with dive planes, a larger rear wing on aluminium stanchions (with real downforce numbers at 250 km/h), carbon rear diffuser and lightweight carbon-kevlar bonnet. It is not a wide-body — it is a motorsport-look overlay that rewards cars that actually see circuit use.

Renntech Styling Pack

Renntech, the US-based AMG specialist, sells a subtler cosmetic pack plus carbon aero bits and lowering modules. Their real strength is chassis and tune work (see Performance below), but the styling items — carbon spoiler, front lip and diffuser inserts — are useful for owners who want a clean OEM+ look.

Wheels

The X290 leaves the factory on 20- or 21-inch AMG forged wheels. Most tuners move it up to 22 inches, which is the sweet spot for fender-fill without compromising ride quality. Typical fitments:

  • Brabus Monoblock Z Platinum Edition — 22 x 9.0J ET35 front / 22 x 10.5J ET40 rear, tyres 265/35 ZR22 front and 295/30 ZR22 rear
  • Mansory YT.5 forged — 22 x 9.5J front / 22 x 11.0J rear (widebody required for rear fitment)
  • Vossen Forged HC-2 / ANRKY AN38 — custom offsets, popular in GCC on air-ride cars
  • HRE P101SC / ADV.1 ADV10 — US market, 22 x 9.5 / 22 x 11 on 4Matic+

Stick to forged, multi-piece or monobloc construction — a 22-inch cast wheel on a 2,045 kg car will crack on any meaningful pothole. PS4S and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S are the default tyre choice; for Dubai and Doha, consider a UHP all-season compound to survive summer tarmac. Load ratings must be 99 or above.

Performance

Stage 1 (ECU + exhaust): Software-only tunes from Renntech, Weistec or MKB lift the GT 63 S to roughly 700-720 hp / 1,000 Nm on premium 98 RON. Pair with a sports cat-back (Capristo, iPE Innotech or Brabus) for a flatter torque curve and +5-8 hp from reduced backpressure. Stage 1 is reversible, keeps the factory turbos and is the sensible starting point.

Stage 2 (hardware): Brabus 800, Renntech R1 or Weistec W.4 programmes add larger hybrid turbos, upgraded intercoolers, high-flow downpipes with sport cats (or GESI units) and methanol/water injection. Power lands at 780-820 hp and 1,000-1,050 Nm. At this level a reinforced MCT clutch pack and upgraded transmission cooler are strongly recommended — the stock wet clutch will survive, but its service life drops.

Stage 3 (Rocket territory): The Brabus Rocket 900 programme and equivalent Renntech R2 builds combine forged internals, bigger turbos again, a larger sump and a full stainless exhaust with electrically actuated valves. Output: 900 hp / 1,250 Nm. Acceptance of VMAX removal brings top speed to 330 km/h.

Exhaust choices worth naming: Brabus valved sport exhaust (mid-range crown), iPE Innotech F1 titanium (loudest, lightest), Capristo (cleanest note for the Brabus-hating purist), Akrapovic Evolution (track homologated).

Interior

Interior work is usually minor. The MBUX dual-screen layout ages well and Burmester 3D audio is already excellent. Popular upgrades: full aniline leather retrim by Vilner or Carlex, carbon-fibre trim replacement (the factory piano black scratches within a year), AMG Performance steering wheel swap on pre-facelift cars, and illuminated door sills. Brabus and Mansory offer full interior programmes priced between EUR 25,000 and 80,000 depending on hide and stitching complexity.

Popular in These Markets

The GT 63 S 4-Door tunes differently depending on where it lives, and serious buyers know it. In the GCC — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh — the dominant look is chrome, gloss-gold or PVD wheels in 22 or 23 inch, Mansory widebody conversions, and attention-grabbing colour changes (Manhattan Blue, candy apple, liquid silver). Tinted everything, air-suspension drop modules and quad-tip pyrotechnic exhausts are near-universal. The climate punishes soft leathers, so owners often switch to perforated vented seats and ceramic coatings. In Germany, the opposite: stealth builds dominate. Brabus 800 mechanical packages with OEM-look aero, painted Monoblock wheels in anthracite, Obsidian Black or Selenite Grey, sometimes a discreet carbon lip — the car needs to clear TUV inspection every two years, so anything that attracts attention (wider tracks, deleted cats) is avoided. In the UK, Mansory and Urban Automotive kits are favourites among Premier League footballers and watch-dealer influencers — visible carbon, diamond-quilted leather, right-hand-drive-specific fitment. Registration is forgiving compared to Germany but insurance premiums on modified GT 63 S cars can double. In the US, the winning formula is Renntech ECU + iPE or Capristo exhaust, retaining the stock bodywork. The CARB-sensitive market prefers tunes that are reversible; the goal is Hellcat-slaying straight-line speed and a V8 soundtrack that actually reaches the neighbours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much power can the M177 V8 safely handle?

The stock M177 block and internals are good for about 850 hp on pump fuel with proper tuning and adequate cooling. Brabus validates 800 hp for road use and 900 hp for the Rocket programme with forged internals. Past 900 hp you are into bespoke engine builds — forged rods, billet mains and a standalone ECU become mandatory, and service intervals shorten dramatically. For daily-driven GT 63 S cars, 720-800 hp is the realistic sweet spot: the factory 9G MCT gearbox and 4Matic+ driveline handle it without complaint.

Will body-kit installation void the Mercedes warranty?

Bolt-on cosmetic parts (spoiler, diffuser, side blades) generally do not affect warranty on unrelated systems — a carbon lip will not void your powertrain cover. However, ECU remaps and widebody conversions usually do: Mercedes-Benz dealers can detect software tampering during routine service, and cutting the factory fenders permanently marks the VIN. Brabus-specific workaround: if you buy a Brabus-built car (not a kit installed elsewhere), Brabus issues its own warranty that effectively parallels Mercedes cover. Larte Design and Renntech typically offer 24-month parts warranty on their own components.

Which wheel size is actually ideal — 21 or 22 inch?

21-inch is factory and keeps the ride quality that makes the GT 4-Door a viable daily car. 22-inch is the common tuner choice because it fills the arches properly, especially on widebody conversions, and looks proportional to the 5-metre-plus length. 23-inch is a GCC show-car move — it looks spectacular but tyre sidewalls drop to 25-series and below, the ride hardens noticeably, and a single pothole can total a wheel. For most owners 22x9.5/22x11 on a 30-profile rear tyre is the optimum balance of stance and daily usability.

How does the GT 63 S 4-Door differ from the 2-door AMG GT?

They share the name and the engine but almost nothing else. The 2-door AMG GT / GT R / Black Series sits on the AMG-developed sports-car platform with a front-mid V8, transaxle gearbox and aluminium spaceframe — it is a Porsche 911 rival. The 4-door X290 is a different car entirely: MRA platform (shared with E-Class), conventional front-engine layout, AMG 9G MCT gearbox mounted to the engine, variable 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive. Think of the 4-door as a lifted CLS 63 with a GT badge rather than as a 4-seat supercar. That also means tuning parts do not cross over — a body kit for the 2-door will not fit the 4-door, and vice versa.
